Proper storage protects a rope's properties between seasons too. What matters is temperature, humidity and protection from sunlight and chemicals.
Heat, direct sunlight or contact with chemicals damage a rope's properties. Don't keep using a rope that's been splashed with a chemical.
What conditions should you store a rope in?
Store the rope at a humidity of around 60% and a temperature of around 20 °C. Don't store it near radiant heaters or other heat sources, and avoid direct sunlight — that goes for shop windows too.
A rope must not come into contact with chemicals (organic chemicals, oils, acids) or their vapours — if it does, stop using the rope. Don't use a rope marked with unknown adhesive tape either (apart from tapes recommended by the manufacturer).
How long can you store a rope?
The maximum storage time for an unused rope is up to 5 years — without reducing its usable life.
